Clattenburg and Dunn, along with Wells and Tremblay, worked on a proposal for a 13-episode season of the show and traveled to Toronto to pitch the show to The Comedy Network. The feature film was shown at the Atlantic Film Festival in 1999, and it caught the attention of producer Barrie Dunn, who saw the potential for a television series. ![]() He hoped that the film would deter others from the life of crime he had chosen. In the 1999 feature film Trailer Park Boys, the character Julian states to the camera that he wanted his life to be documented after receiving a telephone psychic's prediction that he would die soon. It was the first time Robb, John Paul and John Dunsworth worked together. The film followed the exploits of two friends, Rob ( Robb Wells) and Gary William or GW ( John Paul Tremblay), although it is not based in the same setting as Trailer Park Boys. The series premiered on Showcase on April 20, 2001, and originally ran for seven seasons before concluding with a one-hour special on December 7, 2008. The show follows the misadventures of a group of trailer park residents, including two lead characters in and out of prison, living in the fictional "Sunnyvale Trailer Park" in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The group’s follow-up “All I Need Is A Miracle” did even better, making it up to #5. The Mechanics’ debut single “ Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)” peaked at #6. In the time that Collins ventured off to make No Jacket Required, Genesis bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford started a side project called Mike + The Mechanics, and their self-titled debut album had done well for itself, launching two singles into the top 10. (“No One Is To Blame” is a 7.) Collins seemed to have an invisible touch.Īnd yet Phil Collins was not the only member of Genesis who was charting around that time. (It’s a 10.) But Collins, working with regular collaborator Hugh Padham, had co-produced Howard Jones’ single “ No One Is To Blame,” and that song was still in the top 20 after peaking at #4. “ Take Me Home,” the fourth and final single from No Jacket Required, had only just dropped off the charts after peaking at #7. The week that “Genesis” hit #1, Collins didn’t have any singles on the Hot 100. It definitely sounded like a Phil Collins album. A whole lot of people probably heard Genesis’ Invisible Touch album as the follow-up to No Jacket Required. By the time Genesis reached #1 with “Invisible Touch,” Collins had already scored three #1 singles of his own, and his album No Jacket Required had been one of the biggest sellers of 1985. Collins could’ve left Genesis at any point, but he decided instead to balance out his solo work with the band that had brought him to the dance. By the time Genesis scored their only #1 hit, ’70s art-rock peers like Pink Floyd and Yes and even Vangelis had made #1 hits, but none of them had come to utterly dominate American pop radio the way Genesis had.īy that time, Genesis were, of course, led by Phil Collins, the goofy and genial drummer who, against all odds, had become one of the world’s biggest pop stars. By the summer of 1986, for instance, Genesis, a band once known for expansively bugged-out concept albums, had become a chart-conquering behemoth. All it had to do was stop being prog-rock. ![]() ![]() It sucks and we are all worse for it.ĭon’t fear age. Declaring that younger people should have nothing to look forward to and that older people should stay separated and lonely sucks. That drive towards separation and puritanism sucks. There’s this strong implication that if an older person wants to interact with a younger person, there is something inherently predatory about that. Over the past decade, there’s been a really toxic movement towards keeping different ages strictly separated, both in and outside of fandom. On both sides, even! I went to Philcon a few years ago, which tends towards older fans, and an older woman I was talking to sadly told me that she thought fandom was dying out, because she never saw younger fans any more. I started getting into fandom already knowing there was a road ahead for me as I got older, full of handmade costumes and late night movies and shelves of pewter dragon goblets and mixed-aged road trips to meet ups and conventions.Īnd it kills me that so many people don’t know that sort of community even exists. I am forever grateful my friends dragged me into that, because it was my first introduction to fandom in older adults. They remain popular due to their readily available raw materials, simple manufacture, low cost, ease of maintenance, basic-skilled assembly and attractive variety of colours, textures and finishes. Brick was then popularised in northern America and other English, Belgian, Dutch, French, Spanish and Portuguese territories, through early émigrés taking their masonry skills abroad. Other cities followed suit during the 18th century industrial revolution as bricks proved a hardy, enduring, cost effective, simple to construct, reliable, impervious, consistently dimensioned building unit protecting against damp air and wet ground conditions, especially after the invention of fast, mass manufacturing techniques. The exploration of new forms and manufacturing methods seen a return to popularity, combined with their increasingly popular reputation as a replacement to timber in densely populated cities in the 17th century, particularly London, due to their far superior fire retarding properties, following a spate of particularly serious, destructive urban fires that ripped through older timber building stock. Bricks were then regularly used in Europe from around the 12th century, when northern European countries traded materials, knowledge and design ideologies with Italy during the Gothic and Renaissance eras, spreading the use of Roman designs and construction methods, until dying out for a period due to bricks’ inability to recreate the intricate shapes of ornament and decoration associated with these styles. Clay bricks were used extensively throughout the Roman Empire thanks to the Romans’ invention of the mobile kiln, an innovation on the kiln used by ancient Egyptian builders to fire clay mixtures when placed in moulds, which enabled brick manufacture across Rome’s territories, using an increased range of local clay and soil compositions. With recorded uses dating back over 9000 years, brick traces its origins to mud and straw adobe blocks as found in Africa, southern Asian and southern American regions where hot, dry climates quickly dried and cured the earth bricks naturally in the heat.
